Headphones have certainly come a long way since Sony first invented the Walkman back in 1979. No longer do you have to make do with tinny sound, a flimsy overhead wire at some uncomfortable foam padding.
While it is still possible to buy cheap headphones (just look at the headphones Apple distribute with their iPod) it is also possible to spend a small fortune on headphones.
In this article we look at Why You Should Buy a Decent Set of Headphones.
You Want to Hear Everything.
We all know that there is a notable difference to television when we moved from black and white to colour. You probably do not know that when you listen to your music using cheap speakers or headphones that you are actually not hearing everything that is in the recording.
The simple fact is that cheap headphones and speakers are not capable of reproducing every minuet detail of a recording. This means that you are probably not hearings instruments that are recorded.
I was amazed the first time I ever tried a set of high end headphones and could hear instruments and sounds in my favourite tracks that I had never heard before. It was like hearing songs that I had known for years in a whole new light.
Better Stereo Separation.
Stereo means that there are two speakers which allow the placement of instruments and sounds. When you listen to music on cheap headphones the stereo separation often suffers what is known as stereo bleed. This means that sound meant for one speaker bleeds into the other making the stereo effect inaccurate and ineffective.
A good set of high end headphones means that you will have the best possible stereo effect.
You Don’t Like Distortion.
Before I go into this I will make the point of stating that loud music, especially loud music through headphones, can seriously and permanently damage your hearing. Even though we know this we do still enjoy listening to loud music especially though headphones.
The problem with cheaper headphones is that they often distort even at lower volumes. This can lead to a very frustrating listening experience as your music breaks up under a heavy amount of distortion.
Expensive headphones do not suffer from this because they are of a more solid build and the actual speaker inside the headphones is of better quality meaning that it will be less likely to suffer from distortion.
Decent, good quality headphones allow you to crank up your music and listen to it with no distortion till your head blows off.
You Like Deep Bass and Crisp Clean Treble.
As we have just mentioned cheap headphones suffer from distortion and one of the main reasons your headphones will distort is due to the bass in your music. If you like deep bass in your music then you really need to be investing in a pair of good quality headphones as they will be able to accurately able to reproduce even the deepest of bass sounds with no distortion.
On the opposite end of the scale there is treble. Cheap headphones are not capable of reproducing some of the higher frequencies so you will lose these as well as the bass sounds.
Build Quality.
When Walkman’s first came out the headphones that came with them would consist of two cheap pieces of plastic on attached to a really thin bit of wire which went over your head. With cheap headphones little has changed. If you are a person who likes your products to last and like a good build quality then high quality headphones are the way to go.
Status Symbol.
Let us be honest. We live in a society where we enjoy our brand names and nothing makes you look cooler than walking down the street with a pair of Dre Beats Headphones
