For those of you who are not aware DMS or Digital Media Service as it is known is the name given to an online service provider that sells access to a digital library of content such as movies, software, images or literature. A good example of a DMS which provides a movie library to its users is Netflix.
Two of the best known Digital Media Services that provide mainly music content are Spotify Premium and of course Apples iTunes Match Cloud service.
Here we put Spotify up against iTunes Match to see who comes out on top.
Music Tracks.
Spotify Premium.
Spotify has an extensive library of music available to its users. Over 15 million tracks to give you an idea of what is meant by extensive and pretty much all genres of music are covered within this library. Tracks are recorded at a rate of 320kbs so you can be assured of top notch listening quality.
iTunes Match.
Your iTunes library is ‘matched’ in the cloud at 256kbs so the quality of your tracks is as good as you can expect. Unmatched tracks are uploaded.
Winner.
Spotify Premium is a clear winner as it gives its users access to a huge high quality library of music and listening pleasure.
Uploading.
Spotify Premium.
There is no uploading required with Spotify. Playlists are cloud synced with all devices instantly.
iTunes Match.
The uploading of your music library, especially larger libraries, can take several days to complete or ‘match’ as it is called by Apple.
Winner.
Spotify wins this category as there is no time lost with pointless uploads as everything is streamed live from the spotify cloud server.
Mobile.
Spotify Premium.
You pick any type of mobile device Spotify will work with it. You simply stream the music that you wish to hear live from Spotify. You can also download and save your music via the use of 3G or Wi-Fi.
iTunes Match.
iTunes Match only works with an iDevice brand mobile cell phone meaning that it only works with your standard Apple products. All tracks are played instantly but are actually downloading as you listen to them. Once you start using ‘match’ you lose the ability to sync your device with iTunes which is just ridiculous.
Winner.
Spotify clearly wins the mobile category. It is compatible with a wide variety of devices including Apple iDevices so there is just no competition from Apple’s iTunes Match service.
Social Media.
Spotify Premium.
Spotify comes with absolutely superb and easy to use Facebook and Twitter integration so you can share all of your musical tastes with ease.
iTunes Match.
iTunes Match comes with basic iTunes integration but other than that there is nothing. No Facebook or Twitter integration and not even any form of integration with Apples Ping service.
Winner.
Spotify is a clear winner when it comes to sharing. Apple does not even try to compete.
Final Verdict.
Spotify Premium.
Spotify is a clear winner over iTunes when it comes to DMS. It has a library of over 15 million high quality tracks and that library is growing daily. It is an easy to use service which is available on a wide range of devices and well worth the yearly cost.
iTunes Match.
iTunes Match is nothing more than a half decent service which is not really required for Apple’s products for the simple reason that most of Apple’s products have enough on board storage to render such services pointless. That said I am sure the Match service will be a hit with hard-core Apple fans.
