I have noticed that a lot of high definition video files seem to exist in a format with the .MKV file extension. The MKV file extension is short for Matroska which is the name of the company which developed the file format.
While there is nothing actually wrong with the MKV file format its main problem is that there is still a lot of hardware out there which will not play MKV files. Unfortunately one of the most popular bits of hardware that does not support MKV playback is Sony’s PlayStation 3.
If you have MKV video files which you need to convert so that you can watch them on your PS3 or other unsupported device then your best option is to convert the MKV files to AVI format. AVI being the very popular and widely used Audio Video Interleave format which will of course play on your PlayStation 3.
If you have already attempted to convert an MKV file to AVI format you will have no doubt ran into countless numbers of software packages that all claim to do this simple conversion for you and all claim to be free of charge. OF course they are all free to download but once you make any attempt to convert your MKV file to AVI you will be asked to pay money for a registration code and that is the end of that.
All is not lost because there is one software package out there which is free and does indeed convert MKV to AVI.
The software in question is named MKV2VOB. You can download MKV2VOB here.
Once you have the MKV2VOB software installed on your computer the rest of converting MKV files to the AVI format is pretty simply of a task.
Simply open up MKV2VOB and click on the configuration tab so that you can configure the software to convert your file properly. The screen you will now have looks like the screenshot below.
Now what you need to do is look for the box that is for the ‘Output File Extension’. Click the drop down box and select the avi option.
It is also advisable that you check the box that reads ‘Always Transcode DTS’. By checking this box you will not face the problem that many users of MKV2VOB seem to run into and that problem is no sound on the converted file.
Now that you are done with the configuration you need to click on the ‘Add File’ tab. Here you will select the source file (the MKV file) that you wish to convert and also the destination folder which is where you will want your converted AVI file to be saved.
Next to the ‘Source File’ box click on the browse button and navigate to select the MKV file that you want to convert to AVI.
Now click on the browse tab that is next to the ‘Destination Folder’ box. Here you simply select the folder in which you want your converted AVI file to be saved. Once you have done this you are ready to convert the MKV file to AVI.
Click on the ‘Add File’ button and the software will start converting the MKV file to AVI. The progress of the operation will be monitored by the blue bar that moves from the left of the screen to the right. The software will indicate when the process is complete and you are then all done. You have converted your MKV file in to an AVI file format.
