It will come of little surprise to most of you that there is a huge amount of our information and data stored on our computers and laptops. Even when we think that we have no personal information on our computers you may be very surprised to learn that your computer has actually stored a large amount of information with regards to your internet browsing habits to name but only one.
Just because you cannot see this stored information does not mean that it is not there.
When you browse and surf the internet your computer does in fact store and record certain information about what you have been up to. This means that if your computer was to fall into the wrong persons hands then it would be possible for them to snoop on a good chunk of your information. This may allow them access to your Facebook and Twitter Account, your emails, your eBay account and even your bank account.
These facts should cause concern if you are ever giving away an old computer or hard drive from your computer as you are actually giving away a wealth of your personal information. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that just because you have deleted files or even formatted your hard drive that your data is wiped and erased because it may not be.
If you are going to give away a computer or even throw it away then it is very important that you make sure you know how to erase your hard drive and delete all the data on it. The same applies if you are about to throw away an old hard drive or give an old hard drive away. You must make sure that you have erased all of the data and files from the hard drive.
If you are simply throwing a hard drive or computer away then you may simply choose to pour hot coffee on to the hard drive which will render it useless. If you want to give it away you need make use of a hard disk wiping utility which will remove all of the hidden data and personal information that you cannot see.
It is worth pointing out at this point that performing a Google search for hard drive wiping tools or utilities will provide you with a very long list of software packages that promise to erase every last inch of data from your hard drive. Many of these software tools will advertise themselves as free but in most cases you will find that once you download the software and make an attempt to begin wiping and erasing your hard drive you will be asked to make a payment to continue using it. Even once the payment has been made you will find that the software does not live up to the promises that it has made. When you are dealing with erasing personal data and files from your hard drive you really cannot take the chance of using second rate software or falling victim to some online scammer.
Make sure that when you selecting a hard disk wiping utility you carry out some research before making a purchase and chose a reliable bit of software. Usually I would highly recommend that you chose to use open source or free hard disk wiping software but with identity theft being on the increase it is highly advisable that you opt for a commercial software package.
Why take the risk when it comes to your peace of mind?
